From 2025, the United Kingdom is introducing the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which will affect visitors from visa-free countries, including the United States, Australia, and European Union nations. If you're planning a trip to the UK, here's everything you need to know about this upcoming change.
What is an ETA?
Much like the United States’ ESTA or Canada’s ETA, a UK ETA is an entry requirement for those who do not currently require a visa to travel to or transit through the UK.
Once approved, the ETA is digitally linked to an individual’s passport and is valid for two years, allowing multiple visits of up to six months per trip. However, a new ETA will be required each time a traveller gets a new passport. If you hold more than one passport, make sure to travel with the one linked to your ETA.
Who Needs an ETA?
The following travellers will be required to apply for an ETA before entering the UK:
Eligible non-Europeans: Travellers from countries such as the United States, Australia and Canada can apply now for travel to the UK on or after 8 January 2025.
Eligible Europeans: Those from eligible European countries can apply from 5 March 2025 and will need an ETA for travel to the UK on or after 2 April 2025.
Exemptions:
UK and Irish citizens do not need an ETA.
Individuals holding an existing UK visa do not need an ETA.
How to Apply for an ETA
Applications cost £10 and you can apply via the official UK Government website or through a mobile app. Approval typically takes three days, though it is recommended to apply well in advance of travel. Please note, each individual, including children and babies, must have their own ETA
