Join us as we journey back to its origins, exploring how a simple trunk became an emblem of luxury and a must-have for the elite traveller.
The Beginning of a Legacy
The legendary story of Louis Vuitton’s iconic trunks began in 1854, when a young Vuitton, just 16 years old, arrived in Paris and secured an apprenticeship with the esteemed trunk maker, Monsieur Marechal. Taking to the craft with remarkable skill, Vuitton quickly set himself apart through his innovative designs, attracting an elite clientele, including the Empress of France, Eugénie de Montijo. He soon ventured out on his own, opening a shop on rue Neuve des Capucines in Paris in 1858, where he would go on to revolutionise the travel essential.
A Cult Object Since the 19th Century
Amid the golden age of travel—ushered in by the rise of locomotives, automobiles, ocean liners, and airplanes— the need for sturdy, practical, yet beautiful luggage was more pressing than ever. Enter Louis Vuitton, who, in 1858, introduced the ground-breaking flat-topped, stackable trunk.

With people travelling further, faster, and more frequently than ever before, Vuitton's innovative design emerged as a game-changer, instantly catching the attention of the aristocracy and world travellers alike. As demand surged, other trunk manufacturers rushed to follow suit, prompting the house to expand its trunk coverings over the decades. In 1872, Vuitton introduced a bold striped canvas, followed by the striking Damier (or “checkerboard”) canvas in 1888. But it was in 1896 that the now-legendary Monogram canvas—featuring the interlocking LV initials and floral motifs—made its debut, cementing Louis Vuitton’s trunks as the epitome of luxury travel.
Fun Fact: Each trunk was uniquely fitted with a patented pick-proof lock and put to the ultimate test when Harry Houdini attempted and failed to escape from a box secured with it. Today, this masterful design continues to be a hallmark of Louis Vuitton's craftsmanship!
A Trunk for Every Journey
The trunks' allure extended far beyond their exquisite design. Over the years, the trunk took on various forms, adapted to hold just about anything - from a shoe cabinet conceived for the French opera singer and film star Lily Pons to a deluxe picnic trunk and tea case designed for Prince Youssef Kamal of Cairo and Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1926.

Among the many designs by the legendary Parisian trunk maker, the iconic Library Trunk stands as a true masterpiece and is among the brand’s most popular and collectable models today. Introduced in the late 1950s/early 1960s, this exceptional piece is crafted in the timeless monogram canvas, epitomising sophistication and enduring craftsmanship.
Inside the trunk, you'll find two side columns equipped with adjustable shelves and a small drawer ideal for organising stationery and other essentials. The central compartment includes a secure belt to safely transport heavier items, and a cleverly designed opening serves as a drawing pad, accommodating multiple sheets for the creative traveller.
Perfect to use as a portable library or a striking centrepiece in a living room or study, this vintage LV trunk reflects the skill and attention to detail that defines a special order, making it a truly unique piece of history.
