The Different Types of Private Jets: Which One Should You Charter?

When it comes to chartering a private jet, planning your journey begins with choosing the right aircraft – there’s no such thing as a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution! With everything from very light jets to VIP airliners, each designed to fit specific travel requirements, here’s a quick breakdown of the different private aircraft available to charter.

1. Very Light Jets (VLJs)

Very light jets (VLJs) are the smallest and most economical private jets available to charter, making them a popular option for short trips. With a flight range of approximately 2-3 hours, these jets provide a comfortable ride for small groups of 2-4 passengers. Models like the Embraer Phenom 100 offer a compact yet comfortable cabin along with great performance, ideal for regional trips where speed and cost-effectiveness are top priorities.

2. Light Jets

Stepping up from VLJs, light jets offer slightly more range of up to 1,800 miles – or around three hours of non-stop travel and better passenger capacity (5-7 passengers), making them a top choice for business travellers and smaller groups. The Cessna Citation CJ3 is a popular choice, boasting a sleek, modern interior with ample room for luggage, along with onboard amenities such as adjustable seating, fold-out tables, and in-flight entertainment options.

3. Midsize Jets

For those planning longer domestic or shorter international flights (up to 4 hours), midsize jets offer a good balance of comfort, range, and cost-efficiency. With a capacity for up to 8 passengers, these jets feature larger cabins, ideal for those who want more headroom, full standing capacity, and additional luggage space.

The Bombardier Learjet 60XR is a standout in this category, providing a spacious, quiet cabin with luxurious leather seating, fold-out tables, and an in-flight refreshment centre.

4. Super Midsize Jets

With larger cabin space and greater flying capacity, super midsize jets offer a good middle ground between midsize jets and heavy jets. These aircraft are designed to carry up to 10 passengers comfortably over distances of up to 3,600 miles, making them ideal for transcontinental flights.

Complete with amenities such as reclining seats, fold-out tables, and divan seating that can be converted into beds, super midsize jets provide a highly comfortable and luxurious travel experience.

5. Heavy Jets

Heavy jets offer even more cabin and luggage space than super midsize jets, providing a luxurious, home-like atmosphere with all the amenities necessary for long-haul flights. With room for 10-14 passengers, heavy jets like the Dassault Falcon 2000 are typically equipped with full-service galleys, reclining seats, and dedicated sleeping areas.

These king-size private jets also offer impressive performance, with a flying capacity of up to nine hours non-stop and a range of 4,000 miles.

6. Ultra-Long-Range Jets

For those looking to fly even further, ultra-long-range jets such as the Gulfstream G650 and the Bombardier Global 5000, are the best option for you. Effortlessly linking key global cities like New York and Tokyo, as well as Los Angeles and London, these jets envelop up to 19 passengers in unsurpassed luxury.

With significantly larger cabin sizes, lavishly appointed interiors and ultramodern amenities, this category provides the ultimate in comfort. Notable features include a full galley, large TVs, king-size beds, bathrooms and designated areas for dining, work and entertainment.

7. Executive Airliners

At the very top of the spectrum are executive airliners, such as the Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) or Airbus ACJ. These massive aircraft are customised for ultra-high-end private travel, providing vast cabins that can be designed to include private bedrooms, conference rooms, and even showers. Executive airliners are perfect for heads of state, large groups, or corporate delegations, offering unrivalled luxury and space for up to 50 passengers, with intercontinental range and the ultimate in-flight experience.
